As the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the 2004 tsunami-devastated regions continues, questions remain on how this rebuilding effort contributes to building disaster-resilient communities and better environment as well as preserving the legacy of the worst natural disaster of the century for future generations. Coming into its 4th year, this international workshop brings together experts, researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from around the world sharing their knowledge and experiences that improve earthquake and tsunami disaster management strategies thereby reducing risks in tsunami-prone regions. This workshop is organized by the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh, Indonesia, in cooperation with Kobe University, Japan, and will be held at the Hermes Palace Hotel Banda Aceh on November 23-25, 2009. The programs will include plenary addresses, presentations and expo.

The 4th AIWEST-DR (Annual International Workshop & Expo on Sumatra Tsunami Disaster & Recovery) is an annual event to commemorate the tragic event of the 2004 Sumatra Tsunami Disaster that have affected many countries around the Indian Ocean and also to learn and prepare for, based on the recovery experiences from the disaster, building a future society which has a strong resilience to tsunami & similar disasters. The AIWEST-DR was started in December 2006 to inaugurate the establishment of Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) of Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh that is located in the middle of the most tsunami-devastated community in the region and loosing more than 190 faculty members and thousands of students and staff. The first AIWEST-DR was successfully organized gathering over 250 participants including those from 6 countries.  Following the successful organization of 2nd and 3rd AIWEST-DR in December,   2007 and 2008, respectively, the 4th AIWEST-DR is organized to achieve the following objectives:

  • To sustain the continuous efforts of collecting and studying the lessons learnt from the 2004 Tsunami Disaster initiated at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd AIWEST-DR;
  • To prepare for the 4th AIWEST-DR which will assist to integrate the international lessons learned over the five year period commemorating the 5th anniversary of Sumatra Tsunami Disaster in 2009;
  • To provide the platform for discussion on how to sustain, organize and collaborate the international efforts in disaster risk reduction of tsunami related subjects.
